How much does an MOT cost?

The maximum an MOT test station may charge is £54.85 for a car and £29.65 for a standard motorcycle. These are ceilings, not prices, and many garages charge well below them.

The maximum fee

DVSA set a maximum fee for each vehicle class. For a car with up to eight passenger seats it is £54.85. For a standard motorcycle it is £29.65. A garage may charge less, and many do, particularly when the test is booked alongside a service.

Retests

If the vehicle fails and you leave it at the test centre for repair, a partial retest within ten working days is usually free. Take it away and bring it back within ten working days and a partial retest fee may apply. Bring it back later than that and you pay for a full test.

What the fee does not cover

The fee is for the test itself. Any repairs needed to pass are separate, and you are free to have them done elsewhere.
