The fine
Driving without a valid MOT carries a fine of up to £1,000. If the vehicle is in a dangerous condition the penalty is higher and can include disqualification.
Tax
Vehicle tax cannot be renewed without a valid MOT. The two are linked, so an expired test blocks the tax renewal until the vehicle passes.
Insurance
An expired MOT can affect a claim. Check the wording of your own policy rather than assuming: insurers treat it differently.
The journey you can still make
You are allowed to drive to a pre-booked MOT appointment, or to a garage for repairs arranged in advance, with no valid certificate. Any other journey is not covered.
